Stuck at a Career Crossroad?

Have you found yourself at a crossroads, contemplating the direction of your career? Do you feel a sense of restlessness or uncertainty about your current path? Are you wondering if there's a deeper calling for you, when you feel that gentle tug within signalling a longing for something beyond the ordinary?

If this is what you’ve been doing recently, don’t worry. It’s perfectly normal to evaluate your career at various points in your life, asking yourself questions like “should I take this job?” or “should I move organisations?” We’ve all done it.

But it can be really uncomfortable when your evaluation morphs into questions like:

  • Have I followed the right career path all this time?

  • Have I wasted my time? Would I have been better off doing something else?

  • Have I become stuck in something that no longer feels right for me?

  • Can I even do something different at this stage in my career?

For even the most adventurous and open minded of us, feeling as if we might have wasted our time travelling in a certain direction instead of following a different path, is a feeling we’d - quite reasonably - rather avoid.

It’s important, however, to recognise these questions you're asking are simply a craving for growth and exploration - and it’s absolutely normal

These moments of deep reflection are signals that you're ready for a change, for a new adventure.

Once you embrace these feelings as an invitation to explore uncharted territories, you can start asking different, more useful and constructive questions of yourself. Things like:

  • Why now, in my career, am I asking these serious questions of myself?

  • What would I like to do differently, in my life and my career?

  • How might I avoid seeing any change as a step backwards?

  • What is standing in the way of me making a change in direction?

  • What, in my heart of hearts, do I think is the right direction for me?

  • What help do I need to find the answer to these questions?

Even when asking these constructive questions, there’s another that often arises, and it can be the scariest one to answer. It’s a question about time:

  • Is it too late to make a change? How much time will it take to make that change? And…is that time worth it?

This is the only question I will answer for you - at least the first part of it.

The answer is it’s never too late to make a change in direction - you just need a way to find the right direction for you.

This is the secret I’ll share with you now…. answering all of your questions and finding the right direction, it all comes down to one thing - uncovering your unique purpose.

Clarity emerges from understanding your purpose. As clarity begins to unfold, so does your confidence. With confidence, you overcome any fears of being stuck or feeling empty and unfulfilled. So, trust in your ability to navigate this journey of self-discovery and start with finding your purpose.

Here’s some tips to get you get started:

  • Embrace the notion that feeling a bit wayward is a natural part of the human experience—a sign that you're primed for personal and professional growth. Only once you normalise it can you begin asking the constructive questions instead of the questions that hold you back.

  • Find inspiration in different places.
If you love reading, there’s a range of books about ‘purpose’ that might have a message and a method that resonates with you.
If listening is more your thing, you can get an audiobook version, or find a podcast around self-development that gives you a nudge in the right direction.
For those that love going down a rabbit hole of research, there’s literally millions of purpose-related articles and videos on the internet.

If none of these interests you, resonate with you or prove useful, get some guidance from a real person. Whether it’s a mentor you trust or a coach that speaks to the part of you searching for answers, a series of conversations that lights a clear pathway to your unique purpose will be an investment in your sense of self and your future fulfilment and success.
